Is it possible to convert shape files to xy file format?

Postby dissanayakes@yahoo.com » Mon Jul 18, 2011 13:54

Dear friends
I want to create a digital terrain model. Is it possible to define the land using ESRI shapefiles with polygons? Is it possible to convert ESRI shape file polygons to .xy file so as to mark the land as required in creating a digital terrain model?

I thank you if you can give me an answer for this problem.

I read the method given in Mohid WIKI where creation of DTM is based on file created on google map. But, as I have already created land shape files using ArcGIS, I want to know whether I can convert land shape file (polygons) to .xy file formt.

I am looking forward to hear from you as soon as possible, because, I am stuck now.

Hi Dissanayake,

Hope you've already found some way to solve your problem.

Just in case the method is:
In the list of your data items (at the left) do a right-click on the shapefile, choose properties, in that new window click on the button Export (down-right corner), in the export window change a file type from line file to polygon file (and select the place and the name for your polygon), then press Save, then OK in the properties window.
Now you have your .xy polygon file.

It's possible to convert polygon or line shapefile to .xy line or polygon; and point shapefile to .xyz (points also through menu Tools).

Hope it can be useful,
Nadya

Hi,

In MOHID Studio you can use the shapefiles to create your bathymetry/topography.

Cheers,
Luis
