you should install windows on your mac (intel based mac). this can be done in two ways:
-installing a virtual machine like parallels desktop or Vmware fusion on your mac and then installing windows on the virtual machine. This solution will use only part of the ram of your machine to run the software under windows.

or

-partitioning the hard disk and installing windows so that you can make a double boot (win and mac). this allows you to use all the ram of your machine when you run programs under windows. to partition the hard disk there is a software called bootcamp. If you have Leopard v10.5 or higher, bootcamp is already on your machine:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp_(software)

in both cases you need to have your own copy of windows to install.

I cannot give more details because it depends also on the version of mac you have.

I suggest you to read this website
http://www.macwindows.com/winintelmac.html

According to your version of mac you may have to follow a specific procedure. Better if you ask how to do it in forum like:

good luck

Hi Isabella,

Thanks for your answer.
What I ment was create a makefile so I can compile mohid code under mac OS using gfortran or other fortran compiler.

I consider in the past the solutions you proposed, but I end up not doing it because of the availability of RAM needed and disk space (windows is not something I want to have on my mac to be honest).

Have you try any of the configurations you described? What is your opinion in terms of speed and RAM use for the VM?

Thanks

João

I tried to use a compiler like gfortran to run mohid but I had problems with missed libraries,
and also I decided to install windows on my mac to benefit from the interfaces used in mohid, like mohid GUI, MOHID post processor and mohid GIS, which are really useful.

In my opinion the best solution is to partition the hard disk.
I have a Mac with Tiger 10.4 and I used Bootcamp to partitionate the hard disk. Note that Bootcamp is expired for Tiger so before to install it I changed the date of my OS to sometime before October 2007
(date of expiring Bootcamp and birth of Leopard).
But I needed Bootcamp only because it is easy tool to partitionate the hard disk.
I manage the double boot using REFIt. http://refit.sourceforge.net/

I have an hard disk 130 GB and I dedicate 50 GB of disk to Windows.
I found this the best solution because I tried to use a virtual machine like Parallel desktop, that is very good, but sometimes crashes on my Mac. Also, by partitioning the hard disk and installing Windows on one of the two partitions, I have no limits in the use of the RAM under windows.

Best,

Isabella
